Food + Dining tips

Reservations

Although they might not always feel necessary, it’s a good idea to make reservations for dinner in advance, even more so if you have a group larger than 4.

Expectations

There are often only 1-2 people working in a restaurant at any given moment, so service is typically slower than we experience in the US. Liquor is relatively expensive. We have found the locals to be very accommodating to dietary restrictions and making you something “off-menu”.

  • Grocery shopping in Zihuat is cheaper and recommended for longer stays

    • Soriana supermarket in Zihuatanejo is your 1-stop shop. Don’t buy fish, chicken or tortillas there, there are fresher options in Troncones.

    • Sam’s Club: This is a mini Sam’s and does not carry much fresh produce, but it’s the best place for large portions of good cheeses, nuts, meat, etc. Decent wine selection, and cases of beer. You will need your membership card.

Local stores have limited options and are quite a bit more expensive.  Here are a couple of specialty items and where to get them!

Cafe del Sol and Indigo offer delicious fresh-baked artisanal bread, make sure to get it in the morning before it sells out.

Fresh bolillos (Mexican white rolls) are available at the main street tiendas (stores) early in the mornings. They also run out!

Yummy, fresh warm tortillas can be found at the Troncones Tortilleria (7 am – 4 pm)

The seafood storefront, run by Carmen + 52-755-136-0484 is in town. She and her family member are there every day except Sunday. They have great seafood, really fresh. They are in town until 1:30-2:00 PM. Carmen also has good sausages.

Chicken you can get right next to Carmen from Bennie. She sells fresh chicken every day until around 1:30-2:00 PM except Sunday.

At Gabi’s in the center you can get your essentials but no meat and/or fish.

Fresh produce and wonderful fruits can be found at Fruteria YAHVE.

Keep your eyes peeled for pop-up Farmer’s markets and pop-ups.

  • Best selections: La Europea in Ixtapa. Great Liquor and imported goody store. Get your “to write home about” great Tequila + Mezcal here.

Good Prices: Groceries Stores + Sams Club in Zihuat will have lower prices then Troncones.

In Troncones: Mexican Beer is available at all the stores in town.

Mini Super Wendy is Troncones’ liquor store with all the basics, and a decent wine selection, all at airport prices. They sell bootleg American Spirit cigarettes. Cash only.

  • We haven’t eaten at every place in Troncones, but here are a few of our favorites:

    Breakfast + Coffee

    Casual Mexican + Seafood

    Spanish

    Argentinian
